Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’, commonly known as Black Mondo Grass, is a compact evergreen ornamental grass with dramatic deep purple-black foliage. Its bold, strap-shaped leaves create striking contrast in borders, gravel gardens, rockeries, and patio containers, making it a popular choice for modern garden design and contemporary landscaping.
This slow-growing, clump-forming perennial typically reaches 15–20 cm in height with a spread of 20–30 cm. In summer, it produces small pale lilac flowers followed by glossy dark berries, adding subtle seasonal interest.
Ideal for edging pathways, underplanting shrubs, pairing with silver or bright green foliage, or creating contrast in mixed container displays. Its architectural shape and unique colour make it a standout feature in both small gardens and larger planting schemes.
